To thrive, oak ecosystems require both active human stewardship as well as widespread public understanding and appreciation of successful oak conservation. Thus, it is crucial to have robust and ongoing communications and messaging around the ecological significance and threats to the region’s oak ecosystems—to galvanize support of and involvement in oak conservation from both the general public and specific groups.
Decade of the Oak
The Decade of the Oak is a grassroots outreach initiative to build awareness and support for oak conservation by connecting individuals with their communities and local landscapes. This is a collaborative effort spanning from British Columbia to northern California, and provides opportunities for partner organizations to directly engage their communities around the protection, restoration, and value of oak trees and oak habitat. The overarching goal is to build broad public appreciation and support for the stewardship, policies, and investments needed to sustain oak landscapes for generations to come.
