SUMMARY:Right Tools\, Right Place: Combating Invasives and Restoring Oak Habitat
DESCRIPTION:This Oregon Forest Resources Insistute (OFRI) training is designed for forest landowners and natural resource professionals who are interested in learning more about managing and restoring Oregon white oak habitats. The day will include a mix of classroom-style presentations and a hands-on field tour. Presenters include Eric Hammond\, Heritage Seedlings; Sarah Hamilton\, Marion SWCD; Jess Shamek\, Metro; Brendan Addis\, Clackamas SWCD; Greg Archuleta\, Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and more! \n\n\n\nDescription \n\n\n\nOregon’s oak habitats are vulnerable. Over time\, invasive plants have spread\, native oak stands have declined and changing conditions have made it harder for oak trees to thrive across the Willamette Valley and beyond. This one-day training is designed for landowners who want practical\, real-world strategies for restoring Oregon white oak habitat and improving overall forest health. We’ll focus on choosing the right tool for the right place\, whether that includes thinning\, mastication\, prescribed fire\, or other management approaches.  \n\n\n\nParticipants will take part in a field tour to better understand how mechanical treatments can support oak restoration and long-term habitat management\, including live demonstrations of brush clearing\,  the use of an air curtain incinerator and the opportunity to speak with an arborist. Your ticket includes refreshments and a sack lunch. \n\n\n\nTarget Audience \n\n\n\n\nForest landowners\n\n\n\nConservation / watershed partners\n\n\n\nForestry professionals\n\n\n\n\nLearning Objectives \n\n\n\nBy the end of this training\, participants will:  \n\n\n\n\nIdentify available technical assistance and cost-share programs \n\n\n\nUnderstand the historical role of oak ecosystems in Oregon\n\n\n\nIdentify common invasive species impacting oak habitat\n\n\n\nRecognize the connection between invasive vegetation\, forest health and wildfire risk\n\n\n\nEvaluate when mechanical treatment\, prescribed fire or other tools are appropriate\n\n\n\nLearn from the real-world oak restoration project at The Oregon Garden\n\n\n\nHear directly from a landowner implementing oak restoration practices\n\n\n\n\nQuestions? \n\n\n\nMargaret Miller\, Forest Landowner Education Manager \n\n\n\nEmail: miller@ofri.org \n\n\n\nPhone: 503-347-5028

SUMMARY:Virtual Lunch 'n Learn hosted by the Oregon Fire Resilience Network
DESCRIPTION:Erin Goodling\, Portland-based researcher\, writer\, illustrator\, and community organizer\, will share a work in progress\, a graphic novel project\, House On Fire: Housing & Climate Crisis\, Housing & Climate Resistance\, shines a light on the intersection of housing issues and wildfire\, with particular emphasis on how wildfire impacts unhoused communities. It also offers insights into the structural roots of catastrophic wildfire\, and amplifies life-affirming ways forward such as Indigenous cultural burning\, mutual aid\, and community resilience efforts. Erin will share a bit about this project\, as well as a zine / coloring book she created in collaboration with Friends of Tryon Creek\, called “Good Fire in the Willamette Valley.”
